The normal Body Mass Index, BMI, for a healthy person is between 25 to 30, unlike overweight persons.
A person weighing 10% to 20% higher than the normal body mass is said to be overweight. If a person weighs above 20% of the normal body mass, using the BMI, such a person is said to be obese.
Fats around the waist, significantly increases the risk of illness.
Fat on Your Heart
Cholesterol build up in the blood vessels narrows it. This results in an increased blood pressure from clogged arteries. Also, the blood clotting ability could be lost which increases risk of stroke. Obese persons could be described as heart attack waiting to happen.
Fat Increases Male Hormones
It had been observed that obese women tend to have higher levels of male hormones than slim women. This could result in hair loss and baldness in women.
Increased male hormones have been known to cause excess facial hair and acne in women.
Fat Triggers Diabetes
Accumulation of body fat in overweight persons over a long period has been found to increase the level of blood insulin. This could result in type 2 Diabetes.
Insulin is the hormone that switches the cell to absorb Glucose from the blood. Accumulation of Fats could make the cells insensitive to insulin therefore, in response, the pancreas pumps more insulin to the blood.
Diabetes Mellitus type 2 is characterized by an increased blood sugar.
Fat affects Sleep negatively.
Overweight people tend to suffer from sleeping problems, sleep apnea being the most dangerous.
Sleep apnea is the intermittent stops in breathing during sleep.
This reduces oxygen level with side effects as severe as headaches, Diabetes, enlarged heart and stroke risk. Eighteen million Americans are estimated to suffer from sleep apnea.
Fat weakens the bone.
Research has shown that excess fats in overweight persons could result in fat replacing bone marrow stromal cells. This would create lots of problems because the stromal cells differentiate to cells of the bone. Replacing stromal cells with fats would weaken the bones and increase risk of a fracture. This could also increase bone-thinning, osteoporosis.
Overweight could also result in a knee, hip and back pains.
In conclusion, obesity would make you prone to certain chronic sickness hence it is undesirable.
